Personality is influenced by a number of factors and they include:

  1. Biological factors
  2. Socio cultural factors
  3. Situational factors

  1. Biological factors: As regards to the PROBLEMS AFFECTING PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT, Biological factors include genetic inheritance, rate of maturation and development, glandular secretions resulting in hormonal activities and intelligence. The initial influence of these factors start from the womb. Manu psychologists recognize the influence of biological in personality development. To them, other factors influence personality development but heredity has an upper hand. A good example of such psychologists is Catelli who concluded that:
  2. Heredity weights more heavily than environment in determining such traits as easy going, warm hearted or cool and reserved.
  3. Heredity is more influential as regards liking to meet people, kindly, impulsive or shy, timid, hostile, inhibited.
  4. Socio-cultural factors: studies conducted in the area of social relationship have shown the importance of social and cultural environment on the development of personality. The culture where an individual finds himself normally affects that individual. The process of socialization determines the type of personality which an individual is likely to develop. The environmental influences on personality can be broken as shown below:
  5. The home: the home influence on the total development of a child is incontrovertible. During the formative years of the years of the child, he learns his values, acquires moral training and social acceptance norms or traditions from parents who are child’s first teacher, the status of the parents no doubt will determine how poorly a child is fed. The family provides valuable experiences at the early stages and these are crucial to the harmonious development of personality. The child to the initial stage, acquires likes and dislikes, stereotypes, expectances of security and danger, as they are practices in the family

It is found that children from families characterized mutual confidence, affection and companionship between them from families characterized by mutual confidence, affection and companionship between parents and children have better adjustment and more independent initiative and confidence than those who come from families with discord.

All these issues raised above are most of the PROBLEMS AFFECTING PERSONALITY  of the child.

  1. The school: the school covers a significant part of a formative life which no doubt will influence the personality of the child. Teachers are supposed to act as good personality models for children to imitate. Children hold their teachers very high hence they copy what the teachers say and do. If teachers are bad models, children will develop maladjusted personalities. Friendly, warm, considerate, objective and well-adjusted teachers are likely to produce children with similar characteristics. We must not forget that the school transmits culture which also influences the personality of the child.
  2. Situational factors:

It is rightly observed that each problem situation or social encounter demands that the individual readjust his thoughts, feelings and actions in order to attain solution and relief and experience mental equilibrium. A person’s level of personality development or maturity are assessed by the way he can handle problem situations as and when they occur.
